Halcyon Ballerina by ryoung Halcyon Ballerina by ryoung
I finally managed to scan the original, upload a high resolution file and enable prints...

In a heavenly calm during her rehearsal performance, the Ballerina Elana Lewis is truly a Halcyon Ballerina.
As Elana herself says: "Why do I dance?.... Why do I breath?"

Produced in cooperation with Ed Flores and Elana Lewis (Thanks Ed and Elana)

Original oil painting produced on stretched 91cm x 61cm canvas using a knife, mixing only on the canvas using a limited colour palette.

There's many more figurative, dance and portrait fine art original oil paintings, pastels and gicle prints on my website: R Young Art

Humbling in it's technique, in it's effect and in the effort. Many of us can draw or paint. You are an artist. Thank you for sharing!

I could easily fav your entire gallery. This one is no exception. And I'm very picky about my ballet art. ;)

Perfectly painted as always. The striking part of this piece is the moment in time, a feeling of anguish, she's about to collapse downward with emotional overload. Wonderful piece of real art.

Wow! I'd love to see it in person to see the texture from the knife!
I love the bold contrast, and the way you have accentuated it with the vertical figure. Very intense!

Ms. Lewis' comment pulls at my emotions like you don't know.

Ballet is the ultimate perfection of motion. A failing perfectionist, I danced in my youth. After my children, two broken ankles, and now a wrecked knee, I fear my dancing days are over.

Why do I breathe? If only to dance and take that next leap, or that perfect arabesque. If only to have that one nanosecond of perfection captured in time as performed by my body. That is the ballet.

This reminds me of those old public service announcements. "Nobody ever says I want to be a junkie when I grow up." One of them had a ballerina spinning clumsily and then falling down.
