Mariinski Theatre's Kirov Ballet, her ethereal figure and outstretched arm, reaches with a sense of sadness, seduced by death, searching for the impending doom as the woman in white in her emotive rendition of Balanchine's gripping La Valse, one of his most innovative and vibrant ballets...

Both the ballerina and the plain black background are painted entirely with a knife. A high level of contrast is provided.
